New FKKCC Literacy Program

This week, I have implemented the FKKCC Literacy Program.  After meeting with the four FK teachers, they let me know that they have trouble leading an effective class because they each have a few students that are extremely behind in English reading, writing, and comprehension.

I let them know that this is quite a common problem: when I taught an “Introduction to Law” class to high schoolers at a Washington, DC public school, there were several  students that had severely stunted literacy capabilities.

To ensure that all of our students can sufficiently read and write, I’ve launched the new Literacy Program, in which FK volunteers will tutor the students in need of help on a one-on-one basis.  I’ll monitor this program’s progress and let everyone know how it proceeds.  The kids are excited about it – they love the attention, and they love the pass out of class!  I think it will do wonders for the FK literacy rate.

This is a great idea – yes, it was hard to teach in classes where some pupils could understand perfectly and others not at all. I’ll look forward to doing some individual work like this on my next visit. Will you be devising a programme to follow, so that short-term volunteers with no special training can be of use here too? Please?

I am so excited to hear about this program! This is such a huge problem facing out school state-side. One-on-one tutoring is truly the only way to help educate the children who have been left behind the the traditional classroom setting. I’m looking forward to hearing about the results!

Definitely! I ask that the volunteers take notes on their progress with the child they are tutoring. When a new volunteer arrives, even for a shorter stay, I meet with them regarding literacy teaching strategies and to give them background on the child they will be helping. I’m getting this volunteer program into top shape!
